i guess i should jump right in. i've got a soft spot for a mild-mannered girl who looks me in the eye and speaks with true conviction. who greets me with a foxy smile and shows some skin on the weekend. i'm thinking you should make no bones about it, because someone's got your number and your number's up. or maybe you could write a song about it, because someone's got your number and your number's up. close your eyes and let the bat do the work, sometimes it makes more sense than leaving them open. and i had this crazy dream where i'd forget where mom and dad had parked the van. the amount of blue exhaust that it produced you'd not believe unless you'd seen it. i'm thinking you should make no bones about it, because someone's got your number and your number's up. or maybe you could write a song about it, because someone's got your number and your number's up.

this guy i met, no creases in his shoes-- i found it hard to trust him. but come to think of it, didn't we have a class at rvc? or maybe not. if you know the rules, it's license to break them. and should you need the tools, they're yours for the taking. but man, that day will come when you have to run like hell from someone who saw the whole thing. the whole thing. sneaking into your house, us dripping from the swimming pool. the drainpipe to the roof then through the window. surprised by what we found, and not beneath the mattress-- the dogs did not wake up. if you know the rules, it's license to break them. and should you need the tools, they're yours for the taking. but man, that day will come when you have to run like hell from someone who saw the whole thing. the whole thing. all hours of the night people and trucks might be making noise. i drew my blinds and set my alarm and tried to sleep. but they still might be making noise. be making noise.

possession 05:06
fried and bellies up, they'd been dead for seven days, and amy cried and cried. lost among the thicket, we had brambles on our clothes, clay between our toes. smiling like a tulip, i'd gone off to see the man, or what was left of him. broken family plate, i buried it in the sand. have you not done the same? and what you've got is leaving quickly. what you've got is leaving quickly. talk about contrition saves face for you and me, sings us both to sleep. cancer in remission has no lifelong guarantee and the produce never keeps. and what you've got is leaving quickly. what you've got is leaving quickly.

the only one 04:38
believe me when i tell you that you're not the only one. i could kiss you on the mouth, insist you never leave me in the night. but you're not the only one. not the only one. and when the circus comes through town-- the dwarves and people breathing fire-- i might quit my job and leave this anxious city to answer barnum's call. i know because you told me: i've always been a joke to you. well, you're not the only one. not the only one.

all the while, on a long walk down my street, i hear the worst sounds from the drunken, angry complex on the corner. hear, "i hate you." "we had some laughs, but now we don't." and, "all our problems could be fixed if you were me or worth the time." have you heard a heart so tiny that it barely makes a sound? mine's as heavy as an anvil and enamored of the hit. on the phone there were harsh words being shared. i could have kept the peace. as the lines were drawn and crossed they stood their ground. hear, "i hate you." "we had some laughs, but now we don't." and, "all our problems could be fixed if you were me or worth the time." have you heard a heart so tiny that it barely makes a sound? mine's as heavy as an anvil and enamored of the hit.

about

"Front man Calvin Fredrickson sounds like he’s borrowing [David] Bazan’s vocal cords throughout, singing in a mellow, plaintive croon that can evoke misery, regret, longing, and guilt-ridden ecstasy. About the only thing missing are explicitly religious themes in the lyrics. Fortunately sewingneedle are more than just Bazan mimics."
- Leor Galil, Chicago Reader

"A melancholy meditation, but one that's startlingly comforting... resting devastating subject matter against delicately mournful melodies and starkly deliberate flourishes."
- Gene Wagendorf III, Windy City Rock

make no bones was featured on Chicago Mixtape 108
